STUDENT ILLNESSES AND ABSENCES:
If your child will not be in attendance due to illness or any other reason, please notify your child’s teacher as well as the office by 9AM. To report an absence, parents should either call the school at 309-691-9089 or send an email to [email protected] as soon as possible. If the office has not received notification of your child’s absence, a call will be placed and/or email will be sent to parents to confirm the absence. Any unconfirmed absence will remain unexcused. As a reminder, if your child is ill, please keep them home.
LEAVING SCHOOL EARLY
Parents are also required to notify the teacher and the office if their children need to leave school early due to an appointment or any other reason. Advanced notification will allow the teacher time to prepare for your child’s departure from the class and reduce interruptions.
Parents Picking up HS Students
The high school hours do run past the K-8 school. It is scheduled for release for 3:30;however, the last bits of class time are scheduled for one on one and assessments so time can be released shortly after the K-8 dismissal. Please wait in the gym or lobby for the students. When they are released from class, they are directed to be in the lobby or the gym and can meet pick up connections there or they can pick up siblings.
Important Attendance Reminder
Please read through the policy on attendance procedure. If a student will be absent, the office or the administration needs to be called that day. For pre-planned absences - especially more than one day--a written notification is needed prior to the absent day(s). Preferably, this notification should be at least one school day before the planned absence.
Important Safety Reminder
This is to remind all that ONLY office staff are assigned to let visitors in the building because we have a specific
guidelines following the lockdown practice drill to follow when allowing any visitors in the building (parents included).
Afterschool, we are not to let anyone in the building as you are exiting the front doors. It may seem unkind to shut the doors directly behind you without letting the visitor in; however, it is the safest method. You may simply explain to the visitor that it is school protocol for office
staff to let in visitors. Add a smile and I'm sure they will understand and appreciate that safety comes first at DU!
DU High School Vacation Policy Forms
Daarul Uloom Islamic High School recognize that a child’s educational experience is not confined to the school building. We understand that vacation trips can be enlightening and valuable to a child’s intellectual growth and we encourage family “togetherness”. On the other hand, we do have concerns about vacations that are taken when school is in session, since vacation time for all students is built into our school calendar.
Please note that the State of Illinois has guidelines that specify that any absences more then 9 days per semester may result in a failure of classes for the semester or even a truancy issue.
State law: "A child may not be absent from a public school without valid cause for 5 percent or more of the previous 180 regular attendance days, or 9 days." It is discouraged for
If you feel that your leave of absence is necessary, the administration needs to be contacted and a meeting needs to be schedule. At this time, administration will explain if the unexcused or excused absence make up policy for the specific reason. A leave of absence form needs to be complete, signed and filed. This can be obtained from the office during the meeting.
FLU
The peak of the cold and flu season is here. To prevent widespread flu in the school, we recommend that your child stay home from school if experiencing flu or cold symptoms. To decide whether or not to send your child to school, please consider the following guidelines:
Consider keeping your child at home for an extra day of rest and observation if he or she has any of the following symptoms:
· Very stuffy or runny nose and/or cough
· Mild sore throat (no fever, no known exposure to strep)
· Headache
· Mild stomach ache
Definitely keep your child at home for treatment and observation if he or she has any of these symptoms:
· Fever (greater than 100 degrees by mount and your child may return to school only after his or her temperature has been consistently below 100 degrees, by mouth, for a minimum of 24 hours)
· Vomiting (even once)
· Diarrhea
· Chills
· General malaise or feelings of fatigue, discomfort, weakness or muscle aches
· Frequent congested (wet) or croupy cough
· Lots of nasal congestion with frequent blowing of nose
To help prevent the flu and other colds, teach your children good hygiene habits:
· Wash hands frequently
· Do not touch eyes, nose or mouth
· Cover mouth and nose when sneezing or coughing, use a paper tissue, throw it away and then wash hands
· Avoid close contact with people who are sick.
Colds are the most contagious during the first 48 hours. A child who has a fever should remain at home until "fever free" for a minimum of 24 hours. A child who has started antibiotics needs to be on the medication for 48 hours before considered non-contagious and able to return to school. Often when a child awakens with vague complaints (the way colds an flu begin) it is wise to observe your child at home for an hour or two before deciding whether or not to bring to school. Your child should be physically able to participate in all school activities on return to school. Keeping a sick child at home will minimize the spread of infections and viruses in the classroom.
Thank you in advance for helping make this year at school as healthy as possible
